CIA fall to the Knights
CIA suffered another disappointing blow on Monday night after being up by as many as 10 points in the final quarter. The home Knights battled to get themselves back into the game and a final lapse of concentration proved costly as CIA went down 61-66.
Darryl Lewis was the game MVP recording his second double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds, closely followed by Chi Lewis-Parry who just missed out on a double-double of his own with 17 points and 9 rebounds.
CIA looked in complete control of the game throughout, successfully getting the ball inside and drawing crucial fouls. Knights go-to-guy Pete Knetchel was shut down in the first half with Chi Lewis-Parry, Lee Fraser and Gene Brown all playing solid defence and keeping the 3-point specialist at bay. CIA were just 1 point down at the end of the first quarter at 13-14. CIA quickly regained the lead in the second with Gene Brown going to the free throw line. Rookie forward Michale Brown also made his presence felt, going to the basket hard and drawing a foul. The Knights would edge CIA again by just two points going in to the half-time break but clearly struggling to settle.
In the third quarter CIA picked up the intensity with guards Babs Maye and Luke Bowler putting the pressure on the opposing Point Guard and feeding the ball inside on offence. Luke topped the assist column with 5.
Player/Coach Tony Brown stepped in to maintain a cool presence at the top of the key as CIA pulled ahead, ending the quarter 48-45. The game continued to swing CIA’s way in the fourth quarter, CIA in control and looking relaxed as they slowly extended the lead to 10 points with just 3 minutes remaining.
In the final minutes CIA failed to convert on offence with several costly turnovers, whilst Pete Knetchel took advantage of the mistakes, knocking down 7 points, 4 of 4 from the foul line. It took 2 minutes for CIA to score their next basket from Chi Lewis-Parry and seconds later Darryl Lewis added 2 more. But it wasn’t enough to seal the victory as the Knights kept a cool head from the line to send CIA home with a loss.
After the game Coach Brown commented, “It was a great game and apart from the final minutes, we played just as I had hoped. We fixed several problems that had plagued us in previous games and we were the better team. Our mistakes in the final minutes cost us dearly but I’m certain from this performance that there are only wins left to come.”
CIA will hope to progress to the second round of the LMBL Cup when they host Division 2 London Cruisers on Saturday 31st October at Westcroft Leisure Centre. The game tips at 7:30pm and features music and cheerleaders. Tickets can be bought on the door, on the night of the game.
