CIA finished 2009 in style by dismissing the visiting Westminster Warriors in a thrilling game that came right down to the wire. CIA shocked the visitors racing to a convincing early lead and despite an epic comeback, held on for a victory that puts CIA through to the Quarter Finals of the LMBL Cup.
CIA led by as many as 17 points as they raced to an early first quarter lead. Shooting Guard Nik Lawry was unstoppable from behind the 3-point arc knocking down 12 points in the first quarter alone. Westminster’s Baker responded with a three of his own as Westminster attempted to build momentum but Chi Lewis-Parry dominated inside with 8 points of his own whilst captain Tony Brown added 6 to close out the quarter 28-11.
Westminster mounted a comeback in the second quarter as Baker and Wilkins caused havoc. Wilkins scored 16 points for the quarter whilst Baker added 9 as Westminster turned the tables to win the quarter 28-15. However CIA never went away retaining the lead going into the half-time break, 43-39.
In the third quarter Tony Brown put on a defensive masterclass as he shut down Westminster’s outside threat Baker to limit the Shooting Guard to just 2 points. Point Guard Luke Bowler brought his assist total to 8 and rebound total to 5. After a hard fought quarter Westminster did enough to hold a narrow lead 56-54.
It was a tense final quarter for both teams but it was the big men that came up big. Small Forward Michale Brown added 5 big points and 4 rebounds, as well as a string of defensive plays, before being forced to rest with 5 personal fouls. As CIA edged back into the lead, veteran Tayo Orija showed a cool head knocking down crucial foul shots to keep CIA ahead. Chi Lewis-Parry made his presence felt with two huge blocks as well as 10 points and 4 rebounds and played great defence with seconds remaining to hold on to a 1 point lead and close out the game, 79-78.
Chi Lewis-Parry recorded a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Tony Brown was on fire from the field scoring 6 from 7 whilst Nik Lawry followed closely behind shooting 6 from 8. Point Guard Luke Bowler and Small Forward Michale Brown both narrowly missed out on double-doubles with Bowler recording 10 assists and 7 rebounds and 8 points and 8 rebounds for Brown.
Alleyn’s Apaches, Rocco’s Raiders, Omega Lewisham Thunder, Middlesex University and the Cardinals will all join CIA in the Quarter Final draw. CIA remain unbeaten at home and await the draw in the New Year.
