CIA coach basketball to over 40 Primary and Secondary schools in South London, spanning several London boroughs and reaching thousands of young children every year. In late 2009 CIA will launch a national grassroots coaching and mentoring program called ‘Hoops’ alongside Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL). The program is expected to launch in all 130 leisure centres in GLL’s London-wide portfolio.
Our players act as role models for our young people and work on court as mentors. We firmly believe that players benefit from what they’re taught being effectively used on the court. Uniquely, after successful assessment and CRB checks, our players are trained and employed as coaches, going out to all the schools and developing the fundamentals that lead them all the way to competition.
Coaching ranges from Early Morning sessions, PPA time (Planning, Preparation and Assessment), Lunch-time clubs and after school (extra-curricular) sessions. We also coach within the National Curriculum, meaning we coach not only those who show a committed interest in basketball, but also those developing a diverse love for sport. We even coach teachers! After seeing their students progress many teachers sign up to be taught a Level 1 or 2 Coaching award to receive a basic grounding in basketball coaching.
In a move to develop basketball in schools further, CIA now sponsor and run the Sutton Primary and Secondary Schools League. The league widens the opportunities for young people to find regular, controlled and safe competition. Because our players work with the schools, they coach them through the Schools League too so students can put into practice what they’re being taught each week, with measurable progress.
