How we coach

Our coaching methods were developed by two coaches with over 35 years of playing and coaching experience. The program has been developed with grassroots development at it’s core, meaning no one is excluded. We employ four primary fundamentals: passing, shooting, dribbling and rebounding and teach ancillary (complimentary) skills at every stage.

We use a ‘GRID System’, authored by Senior Tutor Jim Walsh, that enables coaches to break down complex skills into manageable layers, taking individuals that have never played the game before and filtering them towards team play in performance basketball. The ‘GRID System’ simply puts a structure in place that is invisible to players, combining individual responsibility and individual skills, working together in a team environment. By breaking down the teaching of skills into layers we ensure coaches have realistic expectations of their players, not solely based around ability. We allow coaches to maintain their own unique character whilst matching coaching styles to the level of the players being coached.

Over our 15 year history we’ve found that coaching young people can be a skill in itself and over that time we’ve developed a unique understanding of grassroots coaching. We’re excited to be launching a brand new program in 2010, our 15th Year Anniversary, that incorporates this learning and develops players of any age and ability.

Do you only coach kids?

No, we also have coaches that specialize in ‘remedial coaching’. This form of coaching can be described as ‘curative,’ making adjustments to improve specialist skills such as increasing shooting percentage. The GRID system works here too, stressing the importance of spacing and timing and teaching players to pass and move with purpose.

If you’d like to know more about our coaching, why not come down and watch or even get involved. We coach a variety of sessions every week and you’re welcome to attend!
